    • Charles was defated & captured by the armies of the Scots & English parliments in the English civil wars in 1642. After a brief escape in 1647 he was imprisoned on the Isle of Wight. By 1648 Oliver Cromwell had consolidated control over England and Charles was tried & convicted of High Treason in 1649.

      The monachy was abloshed after his execution and England became a republic "Commonwealth of England" until 1660 when the monachy was restored to Charles's son, Charles II.
