Notes - Last name: GilesThis interesting surname is of Pre Christian, Ancient Greek origin. It is a short form of "Aegidius", meaning "a wearer of the goatskin", a refernce to a holy man, or somebody who did good works. St. Giles (originally Aegidius) left Greece to become a hermit in France, and was only discovered when the hind from whose milk he lived, was pursued to his hermitage by a royal hunting party. It is said that his Greek name was turned into Gidie, then to Gide, and finally became Gilles, the usual French form. St. Giles is regarded as the patron of beggars and cripples; hence the London church of St. Giles Cripplegate. The name was introduced into England and Scotland by the Normans, with the names Gilo and Ghilo appearing in the Domesday Book of 1086. In the modern idiom the surname has many spellings, and is found in almost every European country. These spellings range from Giles, Gyles and Jiles to Agidi, Gillee, Ilchman, and Gillyns! After receiving the Marriage Certificate of James Edward Giles the 2nd I found that his father and mother were recorded as James Edward Giles, ClergymanThat James II listed on his wedding day that he was born in Gloustershire EnglandThat he had been previously married and widowed in October 1892That Eva had no known Mother or FatherThat she was a spinster
Research into the location of James in NZ uncovered him in residents as a farmer with Eva in Weymouth !!!
To think that James came from England, Massachusetts rried in Auckland, farmed in Weymouth which must have been the back and beyond in those days (1914) and then in 1960 Stan Giles moved from Wairou worked in Otahuhu and decided of all places to build a house WEYMOUTH
I note it was a reverant Beecroft who married James and Eva and distinctly remember Mr Beecroft having a farm about 100 meters from our home when I was a child
I have James aged 49 in 1901 leaving Pago, Samoa to San Francisco
He had a James Giles aged 24 Female marked as wife This makes her Eva Lena
and a JE Giles aged 2 male, Massachusetts rked as children, Who is the mother as he married Eva in 1900, or did he have JE in 1899 them marry Eva 1900 as Ana had already died
and Charlotte aged 1 year 2 months also marked as children
Charlotte and James dates are correct so I can only assume it is James but who the other Giles are is a mystery as these dont coenside with what we know to date
